And yes, I will admit, "money is not an issue" when it comes to hardware, it is plain stupid to work on slower hardware that will waste your time measured in months, when the investment of $1000 could be recovered in a day or two if you get good at your job. Now, to the beef: I am trying to max out my RAM every few years, so that I can kinda go "pedal to the metal" with a project or another, like Machine Learning in Memory, or just trying to avoid crashes from dodgy virtual memory code. You could almost argue that it is not healthy to work on PCs longer than such shared resources allow anyway!

I don't know if I've been spoiled by "socialism" too, but there's hardly a CS department that does not make available to students PC labs and stuff. And people have done so even before today's age of freemium cloud services. You can probably complete your degree with an abacus. I could justify the cost but I understand why most don't. So TL DR is 64 GB "much" better? Depends on what you need/want. Host OS + one performant VM and that 32 is already used up - no thanks.
I wouldn't expect the next rev to be more than 32 GB max. Depending on what your tasks are it could mean significant performance differences. Yeah, the built-in SSD is fast (~2.6 GB/s r/w), but RAM will always be faster (6 GB/s r, 5.2 GB/s w). Why put extra write cycles on the SSD with swap if you don't have to?Īnother thing to consider, perhaps particularly relevant in CS, is the extra RAM gives you the ability to employ usably-large RAM disks. I rely heavily on VMs for my job and with 64 GB I don't even think about RAM usage. MacOS will take aggressive advantage of any extra RAM it finds. Currently I have 11 apps open in Dock, 19 GB used, and 45 GB cached.
